Foreign names to Chinese

Here is a list to common English male first names and common English female first namesand how they are translated into Chinese. These initial lists were compiled based on the most popular baby names in the United States in 1880. For now they provide a starting point. Some of those names are redundant, in that different spellings are used for the same original name. I will clean that up as we move along.

Some foreign people gave themselves Chinese names. In some cases, those names stuck, such as 费正清, for famed Sinologist John King Fairbank, 赛珍珠 for Pearl Buck, whose China-themed novels were very influential. These names are a minority, but are very noteworthy.

Like mentioned earlier, most other names are transcribed into Chinese. We are constantly compiling and modifying this list as we add more names.
