I thought you might like to know that i found a way to install SyncToy for XP... having seen the same problem you saw.
If you go here:
http://www.hannes-pavelka.com/MSIInstallerComplainsSetupRequiresNetFrameworkVersion114322ButVersion20IsInstalled.aspx),
you'll get the solution. It basically modifies the *.msi file so that it no longer checks for .Net version on install. A bit of a hack i guess... but it worked for me.
I agree with your concerns about ".Net hell"... but I do believe .Net is much better designed that COM ever was. I guess there's still just a few issues to be worked out.

Unfortunately, I didn't find a way to get around it. I agree, synctoy is a neat tool. Too bad we couldn't use it now.
I heard good words about another tool called robocopy, available from Windows 2003 Resource Kit. Here is a link to some description:

Thanks for your blog post. I briefly used synctoy on a previous XP install, and liked it.
However after rebuilding my PC I find I have the same .net version error as you. I think I may need to uninstall the new version of the .net framework, find an old version, and try again.
I was wondering if you have found another way to get around this problem?
Regards,
Phil J
