Chinese not displayed properly

Due to my hosting company’s issue with MySql language character set, my Chinese entries will not be displayed properly. I am trying to fix it.

My patience with the hosting company, MidPhase, is running low. My site has had many issues in less than one month’s existence.

Firefighter Association Calls

At my house, I am usually the one that answers the telephone.

A couple of weeks ago, we started getting calls around dinner time. The annoying thing was that right after I said “Hello”, I would not hear anything back, even after waiting for a while for a response. So I had to hang up the phone. This continued for 5 or 6 more times.

One Monday morning after I walked our son to school, the phone rang again. I picked up and said “hello”. This time it was not dead silence at the other end. I heard the hesitation and the person asked for my financee. I said she was not home and if there was anything I could do for him. He said he was with the firefighter association of Illinois. And he asked for donations.

Normally I do not have problems with this. But then this guy started saying with the attitude that “we are heroes and you mere mortals are forever indebted to our bravery don’t you think you own us something?”

This really pissed me off. I told him that I am not interested and please take me off the calling list.

I think, I could be wrong on this, that it probably was them that called earlier. As soon as they hear a male answering, they would hang up, because they think that women are usually more sympathetic to their pitch and their methods of making people feeling guilty is more likely to work.

I have also gotten similar calls from police association and they would employ the same guilt technique, which is really annoying and obnoxious. I usually would ask them to mail me some information or give me a website for me to research before I open my wallet. They say they would follow up on that but never do.

Don’t get me wrong. I do believe that a lot of policemen and firefighters are brave and do admirable work. At the same time, I already pay tax dollars to support that. I also do not object their effort to solicit money, but please, don’t have that attitude and use the guilt technique.

By the way, those calls stopped coming ever since that Monday morning. They will probably come back during their next year’s fund-raising drive.

Great webcast on SQLCMD

Michiel Wories, a PM from Microsoft, did a great webcast on SQLCMD back in the summer. I highly recommend you to check it out.

SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio, and BizTalk launch event tomorrow in Chicago

I will be attending the launch tomorrow at McCormick Place. I will be wondering around and attending sessions. Feel free to stop me and say hi if you will be there. To get a glimpse of what I look like, check out the book I co-wrote on SSIS. I am the one on the upper right corner of the cover page.

Microsoft also released a feature pack for SQL Server 2005. Here you can download and install a lot of things, such as drivers for DB2, Native Client, JDBC drivers. Among them, you can download and install SQLCMD by itself. Maybe that’s one way to get around the limititions I described in this post?

wget and lynx

Linux and Unix gurus can ignore this post, but if you have better tips to share, please feel free to comment. I write this mainly as a note to myself and hopefully help out Linux / Unix newbies at the same time.

wget is perfect for downloading stuff through a command line. This is a great tool if your only access to the server is SSH. You can append & at the end of shell command line so the download happens in the background. You can do other productive work while download is ongoing.

lynx is a text based web browser. Don’t laugh, I found it pretty handy for some quick and dirty browsing and Yahoo mail checking. Unfortunately, it does not work with gmail.

Sample Baseball Database for Learning, Testing, and Demo

I came across this from a blog I follow. Dbt even provided a nifty script to figure out the most recent world series win, loss and appearance for every team in the league. I first heard about this database probably a year ago.

Anyway, I thought this really is a great database for my baseball-loving friends
to use as a tool for learning, testing, and demo sql. Here is the link to the download.

As for me, I know almost nothing about baseball. I do know what a home run is;) But I have no idea of what an inning is, which, by the way, is an interesting word.

Pointers on WordPress customization please

I’ve had my blog for a couple of weeks by now. It was hosted by MidPhase. I used it because it had good reviews and a colleague recommended it. Based on my experience so far, I am not too happy with it. I will leave that for another post.

Anyway, I am actually pretty happy with WordPress so far. The installation and initial configuration was not bad. I’ve downloaded a few themes to play with. I’ve settled on this Almost Spring theme from Becca. I did some tweaking myself, mainly on sidebar.php and style.css files. I am a newbie in both PHP and CSS.

I also studied some other people’s blogs for ideas and inspirations, mainly from Chris Hedgate and Danny Howard. That is a big help for me. Thanks guys.

I want advice on 2 issues below:
1. I thought it would be neat to create a table that stores all books that I have read. I can use that to create a WordPress page for those books. Do you know if there is a plugin just for that? I know there is a plugin for you to create tables in MySql. That is no big deal, as I can do that easily using mysql command line. The challenge for me is to write the PHP code and integrate that on the sidebar.

BTW, thanks Danny for this post, I’ve read the book. Wow, it really changed my thinking on a lot of things after reading it.

2. What tools do you use for trackbacks and ego search? I’ve used http://www.technorati.com/, but it would be nice to have a tool or plugin to do that work.

If you have some other cool tips and pointers that you can share, that will be greatly appreciated.

Fix Page 404 Error in WordPress

If
1. You use WordPress;
2. You have permalink turned on;
3. You just wrote a page using WordPress but when you view the page, you get 404 page not found error;

Then
1. Go to Options->Permalinks;
2. Click Update Permalink Structure. If your .htaccess cannot be updated through the web interface (very likely), copy the text and replace what you currently have in that file. Say a silent prayer;) and hopefully it will work.

End If

(How to install and configure ZiGuang on English version of Windows XP)

1. Download紫光;
2. 下载以后的文件需要扩展. 选择c:\temp, 安装软件就会被扩展到那里;
3. 打开c:\temp, 运行unispim30.msi
5. 打开Control Panel, 选择Regional and Language Options;
6. 单击Advanced tab, 在下落单子里选择Chinese (PRC);
7. 有可能需重新启动;
8. 打开Control Panel, 选择Regional and Language Options;
9. 单击Language tab, 单击Details. 你会看到Text Services and Input Languages 窗口. 按需要选择语言. 紫光是Chinese (PRC)后头跟着模糊的乱码;
10. 在Text Services and Input Languages 窗口, 单击Advanced tab, 在Extend support of advanced text service to all programs上打勾;
